Dr. Rachael Byrne graduated with a B.Ed from St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra and is presently employed as a primary school teacher, part-time lecturer, and programme developer. After completing a Master of Arts in Music she studied Music Education in the Kodály Institute of the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music, Kecskemét, Hungary. Rachael recently completed her Doctorate in Education within DCU, Institute of Education.

Rachael is passionate about making music education accessible, meaningful and enjoyable for pupils and teachers alike. To these ends, drawing from the work of Kodály and Kokas, in addition to broader educational theory and practice, her doctoral research involved working with teachers in the exploration of a play-based approach to music education for the Irish primary school context.

An advocate for professional learning to support Irish teachers in the realm of music education, she has facilitated a great deal of professional learning opportunities for primary school teachers in this area.

Examples of PD she has provided previously include:

  • A range of music education workshops including those as part of the Teaching Council’s annual FÉILTE, within Drumcondra Education Centre and international music education conferences

  • TeachMeets, classroom demonstrations and co-teaching to support NQTs in music education

  • Facilitation of a music education ‘Professional Learning Community’ for primary school teachers.

This new 10-week course is provided for Primary School teachers who wish to develop their own musical skills and understanding, while also focusing on playful teaching and learning strategies aligned with the Irish Primary Music Curriculum.

Participation will aid teachers in developing confidence for teaching and understanding music of relevance to their Primary school classrooms.

This course is perfect for all primary school teachers seeking to enhance their musical understanding. Whether you are new to the profession and wish to build up your skills and resources, or have years of experience and wish to reinvigorate your music classroom with additional tried-and-tested, fun and engaging ideas, this is the course for you!
